John Denver became a star through the folk-inspired songs that he wrote, many of them located in Colorado. Born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. in Roswell New Mexico, the singer-songwriter fell in love with Colorado and then moved to Aspen. Denver's national anthems to his adopted state have drawn many to Colorado. G. Brown of Colorado Music Hall of Fame, the curator of this hall of fame said: "I don't believe there any other performer who embodies Colorado as John Denver." Denver was a member of the Hall of Fame as its the first member in 2011. Denver has become the image of Colorado to many around the world. When I travel, I always meet someone from the other end of the planet, one from New Zealand and you say 'I'm of Colorado and the first word that comes that comes out of their mouths is Oh John Denver! Brown said. Take Me Home Country Roads was co-written by Bill Danoff - was Denver's first Top 10 single as a solo artist following a short time in small folk groups. Danoff used Johnny Cash as the inspiration for the song, but Denver realized that it could turn into a hit once he heard an earlier version. After the performance to a throng of fans at Washington D.C., the artist recorded the song.
